Curriculum

The GSP curriculum is designed to allow students to take a wide variety of classes in the field of geospatial cartography, GIS, remote sensing, and mobile mapping. The figure below shows how the class flow from introduction, through undergraduate to graduate levels.

Policies for Prerequisite Geospatial Coursework

Below are the policies for equivalents to prerequisites for GSP classes. In cases that are not handled automatically by the Cal Poly Humboldt system (i.e. already articulated), the instructor for a class is the one who makes the final decision whether or not to give out permission numbers and provide them to students.

  1. Students taking both GSP 101 and GSP 101L must take them in the same semester (i.e. they should not take 101 one semester and 101L the next).
  2. Students who have taken classes at other colleges will fall into one of several cases:
    1. The course is already articulated between Cal Poly Humboldt and the other college (i.e. we have already reviewed the class and determined it is equivalent):
      • These students should be able to sign up for the class automatically without speaking with the instructor
    2. The course is not articulated but is within the California system, and appears to be similar:
      • The instructor for GSP 101 will evaluate the course for equivalency, and, if appropriate, will respond to the advisor and student, and cc: the instructor for the subsequent course (e.g. GSP 270) to request they give these students permission numbers.  The GSP Content Committee has a spreadsheet of all California community colleges and will update the Registrar’s Office with proposed articulations.
    3. The course is outside the California system but appears to be similar:
      • The instructor for GSP 101 will evaluate the course for equivalency, and, if appropriate, will respond to the advisor and student, and cc: the instructor for the subsequent course (e.g. GSP 270) to request they give these students permission numbers.
    4. It is difficult for the instructor for GSP 101 to determine if the course is equivalent:
    5. The course is not equivalent:
      • The student cannot bypass the prerequisite.
  3. In cases where a student has previous experience that is not in a class environment (i.e. a work environment), the student will have the option of taking the GSP101 Challenge Exam by following the instructions indicated in the following document: Meeting the GSP 101 Requirement by Exam
